Avatar (Film) Review

This is my first review of a non gaming product but I felt I would add it to the site as it is of Avatar and it is a pretty decent review!

After a lot of hype about a month ago I decided to see whether Avatar was as fantastic as many claimed and I also watched it in 3D!

Avatar is set in the future where the Earth has become a wasteland and has very little resources left. This means corporations have started to try to get a precious mineral from an alien planet named Pandora. This weird planet is inhabited by aliens called the Na`vi who are massive blue creatures who do look quite similar to humans. The humans consider the Na`vi savages and are determined to try to get the resources they want.

Jake Sully`s twin brother has been killed so he has to take his place. The catch is though that he is disabled and is in a wheelchair! He has to take his brother`s role in the Avatar program. Scientists have discovered a way for humans to go in a pod and become a Na`vi with a mix of human and Na`vi DNA. The humans want the minerals and either are going to get the Na`vi to move or just go through them!

The first thing to say is that the special effects are impressive and that they make the action look really cool and spectacular! There is lots of action and the fact Pandora is a strange world means they can use the special effects to make strange creatures in a fantastic scenery and as a result it all looks brilliant! It looks particularly impressive in some of the fighting scenes! The 3D is not overused though and there is not every minute something coming out at you which is good!

The acting is really good and the main parts are played very well! Whether it`s the colonel who wants to smash through everything and could not care less about the Na`vi or Jake who gets stuck in a tricky situation as he realises he can do everything he could not do before and befriends some of the Na`vi! He has some really tough decisions to make about who`s team he is on.

I thought the story reminded me of the Red Indians and Cowboys and the Cowboys are the humans doing whatever they want and not caring what happens to the actual real inhabitants and just invading like savages!

The plot is pretty good but saying that is nothing amazing. It is a little obvious and cliché at times but was still quite good. The film is an epic at 162 minutes long and while it does feel like it goes on for a long time and is probably the longest film I have ever watched it is never that boring!
I think this film is a massive achievement though mainly due to the special effects and technology that has been used in this film!

If it were not for the other elements of the film - people would just say it was a good film. Basically what I am trying to say is that without the special effects and huge budget this would just be a good film! I would definitely say that without 3D it would only be pretty good and I would not say that you had to see it but with 3D it is probably worth anyone`s time just for the experience!

Definitely worth watching and great special effects but not a fantastic plot!
